Why Winter is the Most Overlooked Season for Mulching:
The cold season is upon us, and with that comes indoor activities, board game nights, and reading. Outdoor projects become next year’s problem, and not seeing the overgrown brush or trees outside puts it out of sight and out of mind. However, there are actually many reasons for performing your land clearing in the winter. While land clearing is a year-round service, Winter often works out better for many types of land clearing for a few key reasons:
Faster Tree Mulching:
While tree mulching always comes at a set day rate, paying the same amount for Winter and Summer. Winter Tree Mulching often leads to more land being cleared. In the Summer and warmer months, there are problems with the machine overheating, causing the operator to have to stop and start. In the cooler Winter months, this becomes less of an issue with the cool air cooling down the machine, allowing you to make it through more land in a shorter period of time.
Additionally, the wood itself becomes dormant. While in the Summer months the forestry mulcher is clearing green wood, in the Winter you are going through clearing very dry wood, which is much more brittle and clears much faster. While this is a big machine, and both months you will get a lot of work done, if you want the best amount of work for your day rate, Winter usually works out better.
Pest and disease Control:
When mulching in the warmer months, there are many animals and insects nesting or breeding throughout the brush. If this is a concern, tree mulching in the Winter can prevent the nesting from taking place in the first place, causing the animals to seek other places to shelter. In addition, the mulch created from the trees acts as an insulation, preventing harmful insects from breeding throughout Winter.
Fire Mitigation before Spring Growth:
Tree Mulching in the Winter is ideal for preventing fire spreads or accidents throughout Winter and Spring. Because of the brutal storms and fire season, this is typically the best time to clear this unwanted brush before such fires can occur.
Get ahead for Spring Land Clearing Projects:
Winter land clearing is typically a slower season, due to most homeowners thinking it is better to clear in the Spring and Summer. So if you are planning a big project such as a home extension or new barn, getting the clearing out of the way early will keep you on track. If you call in the Spring when everyone else calls, you typically are forced to wait on the real project at hand, while if you clear in the Winter, you are all prepped and ready to go before everyone else. This causes a nice chain of events by allowing your builder to start on your projects before the client, who waited to clear, making your project the top priority for all contractors, and having your projects done on time.
